Virginia Slims Cigarettes, 1971

Scanned from Taschen's "All-American Ads of the 70s". Click image for 713 x 1000 size.

"Presenting some new clichés Virginia Slims would like to drop into the English language.

A woman's best friend is her dog.
A woman's home is her castle.
The bigger the woman, the harder she falls.
No woman is an island.
We hold these truths to be self-evident: That all women are created equal.
Woman shall not live by bread alone.
One small step for woman, one giant step for womankind.
After all, when you have your own slim cigarette, you really deserve your own clichés, too.

You've come a long way, baby."

Lux Fabric Wash, 1926

Lux Fabric Wash, 1926, originally uploaded by Gatochy.

Scanned from Taschen's "All-American Ads of the 20s". Click image for 677 x 876 size.

"On Monday .. worth $100
On Tuesday.. worth how much?

The ordinary Monday washing is harder on your clothes than six days' wear! 4c a week and you treat everything like fine fabrics!

Count up their cost as you sort the laundry. Even at medium prices your husband's shirts cost $2.00 apiece (and at least 3 in the wash every week!) his underwear $2.00, pajamas $3.00, your housedresses $4.50 each, nightgowns $2.00, the children's rompers $3.00, sheets $2.00 a piece and so on.

More than $100 worth of clothes all told in your own wash on Monday!

What are they worth on Tuesday?

The punishment your clothes get in an ordinary washing is harder on them than all the wear you give them the rest of the week. You can't afford to let the old harsh laundry soap wear out any more clothes in the washing! Clothes cost too much to risk them!

Treat all your laundry like fine fabrics! For just 4c more than you pay for ordinary laundry soap you give all your clothes Lux protection -- save dollars in wear and tear!

You know how faithfully Lux has always guarded your finer things -- your silk and delicate woolens -- how after even repeated washings it restores to you fresh and lovely as new.

Now all your clothes and precious household linens deserve this same fine fabric care! How radiantly clean, rich, sudsy Lux leaves your clothes -- how much longer they last! Lux cleanses out all the dirt without straining the fine fabrics. And -- what's so important: without fading colors.

So kind to hands!

As for your hands -- you can hardly believe such a difference possible! Harsh soap is so rough -- bites your hands so unmercifully. Lux suds are as caressing as the finest toilet soap. Lever Bros. Co., Cambridge, Mass.

Now let Lux save your hands in the laundry just as it does when you wash out a bit of finery -- when you wash dishes.

Enough in the big package for two average washdays."

Volkswagen ad, 1964, originally uploaded by Gatochy.

Scanned from Taschen's "All-American Ads of the 60s". Click image for 503 x 700 size.

"Ugh.

This is an awful picture of a Volkswagen. It's just not us. We don't go in much for trading bees or sales jamborees or assorted powwows. Maybe it's because we don't quite understand the system. We've never figured out why they run clearance sales on brand new cars. If there are cars left over every year, why make so many in the first place? And how come the price goes down, even though the cars are still brand new? How does the poor guy who bought one last week feel about this week's prices? Imagine what a problem it must be to keep enough parts on hand when they're always changing. And for the mechanic to keep track of what he's doing. It's all very confusing. Either we're way behind the times. Or way ahead."

"The New Health-O-Meter De Luxe

Artistic as well as mechanical perfection is attained in the new Health-O-Meter De Luxe automatic bathroom scale. Its gentle elliptical lines harmonize with the motifs of the modern bathroom, and the variety of colors in which it can be furnished enables it to blend with any color scheme.

Placed in your bathroom, it will instantly become an integral and artistic part of it, just as weighing daily has become an inseparable part of the morning toilette of the thinking thousands.

One feels as secure standing on the new Health-O-Meter as on the floor itself, for it is built closer to the floor than any other. Exclusive mechanical features protect its unvarying accuracy, make it practically abuse-proof.

The helpful psychology... of weighing daily

If your health-O-Meter show you are gaining, you eat less - the memory of what it told subconsciously dulls your appetite.

For those who wish to take off or put on weight or reduce in spots, the Scientific Weight Control Course which accompanies each Health-O-Meter will give you the methods approved by the Weight Control Conference in the New York Academy of Medicine. Endorsed by thousands who have used it with the health-O-Meter to regain and retain their normal weight and figure.

Health-O-Meters are procurable at any department, hardware, physicians' supply or drug store.
